Ace of Base(ball)

Well, they picked the name for the 775’s AAA Baseball team. Wait for it…wait for it… ladies and gentlemen, meet your new Reno Aces. Reno Aces? That’s about as original as a remake of Batman.


Family friendly? Aces. Smokin' Aces? Ace Holes? Doesn’t anyone remember how easily it was for kids in school to change your name into a horrible nickname?


We thought baseball was anti-gambling. Sheesh! That's the best name they could come up with? Shoeless Joe and Charlie Hustle must be spinning in their graves. BTW...ANYONE who knows the 775 knows that red is the color of the Devil.


And WTF does Aces have to do with the parent club? The fact that Arizona and Aces both start with the letter “A”?


SHEESH! We thought “Bighorns” was a crappy name. It seems like SK Baseball let their GM’s granddaughter name the team. If this is the best name SK Baseball’s marketing department can come up with it’s gonna be a long, lonely, cash-strapped road.

Diamonds and Rust

Front and center on the RGJ sports page today: “Reno Who?” The story is about the perceived lack of progress being made by the new Triple-A baseball franchise. Funny, all Branch Rickey and the boys had to do was read us here at PTB. We’d set ‘em straight. So, just in case B.R. stops by, we’re gonna make our point again. Reno’s new baseball team should be named the Reno Diamonds.


Why?



1. Baseball is played on a diamond.


2. A diamond is one of the the hardest, toughest substances known to man.


3. One of the four suits in a deck of cards is diamonds.


4. The new Triple-A team’s parent club is the Arizona Diamondbacks.


5. Diamonds are a symbol of affluence.


There you have it…five excellent reasons why the newest team in the 775 should be called the Diamonds. We do have a worry though. Seems the P.R./marketing guys the team is using to find a name is called the “Carol Infranca and Associates marketing and public relations firm." YIKES! That’s the best name C.I. could come up with? If they're allowed to name the new team, they’ll probably call ‘em the Reno Baseball Team. Well, at least the Reno Bighorns is already taken.

Park Place?

Quality baseball will peak interest here for about two weeks. Then, the honeymoon'll be over.


What the hell kind of "mixed use" can you get out of a baseball field anyway? Water slide down the third base line? Internet cafes in the dugouts?


To make a profit with a AAA baseball team, you need butts in seats. The 775 just can't pull that off . We can't even support the teams already here. Besides, where you gonna put it?


Downtown Reno? Crappy Parking.


Sparks Marina? Renoites would commit seppuku.


There just aren't enough people in the 775 who'll drive to WHEREVER to see minor league baseball. Haiku says it all.
